Lew Abulafia was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York almost 60 years ago. Growing up in the tumultous 60's, he moved on to Buffalo, New York and graduated from the School of Dentistry at the State University of New York at Buffalo [SUNY@Buffalo] in 1971.
He served for six years in the US Navy on active duty and continued for an additional 15 years in the Navy Reserve. After leaving the Navy he returned to New York and completed a four year residency in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. After his residency he moved to California and practiced in San Diego for almost 25 years.
His retirement several years ago has finally allowed him the time to pursue a life long passion of Nature and Landscape photography.
Over the past few years, Lew has been fortunate to win multiple awards both locally at the San Diego Fair and the San Diego Natural History Museum Nature and Eye Photo Exhibition.
Last fall, one of his Denali, Alaska images captured first place in the Scenic category in a national publication- "Nature's Best" out of 14,000 submissions and is presently exhibited in the Smithsonian Museum. In addition, he was recently published in the December/2005 issue of "Popular Photography".
