Artist Statement
I mostly photograph people, spanning the spectrum from expressionistic nudes, to dancers, to street scenes, to people fighting their way out of adversity. Viewers must find their own way in my photographs. I don't pretend to be able to describe for them what they should feel or see. Frequently I include fewer contextural elements in my images than do many traditionalists, with my main subjects looming large and prominent. The hope being that the viewers will conjure up much of the context based on their own experiences and to personalize what they perceive is happening in the image. I liken the effect to the difference between watching a drama on TV or listening to it on radio where one is stimulated to let his or her imagination soar off in any direction. I like the viewer to discover meanings and messages in my photographs that may be evident to only themselves.
